Dr. James Perone, University of Mount Union Professor of Music and member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance Historical Society, will discuss his hobby of geocaching and how it fits in with his interest in local and regional history. The program will take place at Rodman Library on Tuesday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m.
Geocaching is a real-world scavenger hunt with players trying to locate containers, or geocaches, by using a GPS or smartphone and clues from the Geocaching.com website. Players are taken to a specific GPS coordinate and begin the scavenger hunt, then share their experience online with others. Geocaches range in sizes from nano (about the size of a flash drive) to small canisters and pill bottles to large plastic boxes.
Geocaching has led Dr. Perone to busy intersections and bridges as well as little known historic cemeteries and museums throughout the Alliance area. He has placed geocaches at the Mabel Hartzell Historic Home and the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.
The presentation will be held in the Main Auditorium of Rodman Public Library located at 215 East Broadway Street in Alliance, OH. No registration is required. For more information, call 330-821-2665, ext. 101.
