Session on Backyard Gardening Set for April 16

MacKinnonThe final One Book-One Community session of 2008 will take place Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at Feed My Sheep Ministries, located at 114 E. Main St.

Entitled "Backyard Gardening" - Real Life Experiences," local gardeners will be on hand to share a variety of experiences and viewpoints. Panelists include Dr. Kate McMahon, English professor at Mount Union College, who will share experiences about gardening at her farm; Zack Johnston, an eighth grader at Marlington Middle School who has been gardening since the age of 3 with his grandfather; Jennifer Scott, VISTA service coordinator at Mount Union College, who will talk about the construction of a raised-bed garden at Feed My Sheep Ministries; and Joyce Williams of Feed My Sheep Ministries who will share information about the free meal program at Feed My Sheep and the planned use of produce raised in the new garden.

Audience participation is encouraged and the session, like all One Book-One Community events, is free and open to the public. Parking is available behind the church. The meeting will be held in Fellowship Hall, which is located on the second floor. Enter through the rear door from the parking lot and go up the elevator to the second floor.

One Book One Community is a community-wide reading program that encourages citizens within the same community to read the same book, followed by discussions of the issues that emerge from the book. This year's book is "Plenty" by Alisa Smith and J. B. MacKinnon.

Alliance's One Book One Community program is sponsored by the Friends of Rodman Public Library, Mount Union College, The Greater Alliance Foundation and The Review.

Members of the One Book executive committee, in addition to Paidas, are Cheryl Paine, Pete Schneller, Diane Thomas and Sandra Giese of Mount Union College; Pat Stone of the Rodman Public Library; Rae Ellen Dale and Libby Patterson of the Alliance City Schools, Michael Zerbe, instructor at Stark State University and former owner of Chapter Two Book Store and Tiffany Gravlee, community activist.
