The One Book-One Community discussion session on farmers markets that was postponed Tuesday due to inclement weather has been
rescheduled for Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Alliance Neighborhood Center, 405 S. Linden Ave.
Entitled "Farmers Markets 101," the session will feature a panel of experts who will discuss portions of this year's book selection, "Plenty," and talk about their personal experiences with farmers markets as well as how to start one in Alliance.
The panel moderator will be Dr. Peter Schneller, Mount Union education professor and member of the Mayor's Green Task Force. The panelists will feature a national, a regional and a local expert on farmers markets and local eating and cooking.
Parker Bosley headlines the panel having earned a national reputation as an advocate of local food and local agriculture. A famed Cleveland restaurateur, Bosley founded Parker’s New American Bistro, which focuses on local seasonal food.
Beth Knorr, market manager for the Countryside Conservancy, oversees the operations of two successful farm markets in the Akron area. She coordinates more than 50 vendors as well as chefs, volunteers and events to enhance the market experience.
Dorsey Ney is the owner of Healthy Heart-Healthy Pleasures at 2354 S. Union Ave. and for the past 12 years has made a commitment to Alliance and its people, providing access to good health choices.
Audience participation will be encouraged and the session, like all One Book-One Community events, is free and open to the public.
"We regretted having to cancel Tuesday’s session because of the weather, but due to the importance this session brings to the Alliance area, we wanted to reschedule as soon as possible," Harry Paidas, chair of the One Book One Community executive committee, said. "The farmers market concept is getting some traction here in Alliance and we feel like we need to strike while the iron is hot by bringing in experts and having an open discussion."
The program is co-sponsored by the Friends of Rodman Public Library, Mount Union College, the Greater Alliance Foundation and The Review.
The next discussion session will be held on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in the Hoover-Price Campus Center at Mount Union College and is entitled: "Cooking and Eating Locally." Authors Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon will visit Alliance on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Union Theatre. "Backyard Gardening" – Real Life Experiences will wrap things up on Wednesday, April 16.
