Program Descriptions

Concurrent Session One

  1. Encore Presentation with Bill Easton, Innovative Interfaces
  2. Fantastic Funds and Rockin' Reports - Corey Seeman, Kresge Business Administration Library, University of Michigan
    [ PDF Slides ] [ Power Point Slides ]
We tend to live with the acquisitions system as it is setup vs. how we would like to have it setup. The perception is that making dramatic changes in the system will cause more headaches and heartaches than it is worth. This session intends to provide a understanding of the role that funds and reports play in the Innovative System. Discussed in this session will be topics such as how to better utilize the statistical reporting; matching funds, codes and reports with the desired statistical needs; and matching the fiscal close method in the Millennium System to match the method that is used at your institution. (This is an expansion of a program delivered at IUG in San Jose)
  3. Where to Go for Guidance - Barb Anderson, Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library
    [ PDF ]
An introduction level session on where you can locate help and training information. We will discuss CSDirect, the Innopacusers Clearinghouse, program handouts and presentations (EGL IUG, IUG, ALAO) and the ever-useful source of knowledge and support: the innopacusers list. And the OhioLINK lists for OhioLINK members.
  4. Circulate Those Web Management Reports! - Ben Kline, University of Cincinnati
    [ Power Point Slides ]
The Web Management Reports function - typically utilized for collection management and administrative purposes - has many circulation uses. My program will demonstrate and discuss how Circulation Services at the University of Cincinnati's Langsam Library has employed the reports to improve data collection, efficiency and quality control. Examples will include how we track circulation and user trends, prioritize shelf-reading projects, aid the assessment of staffing determinations, and much more. I will cover the generation and application of reports with a goal of educating attendees and prompting discussion on further usage and best practices.

Concurrent Session Two

  1. Encore Development Partners: Panel Discussion - Nancy Fleck, Michigan State University; Jim Mann, Greene County Public Library; Victor Zuniga, Westerville Public Library; Leigh Duncan, Wright State University; Bill Easton, Innovative Interfaces
The panel of development partners will describe their site’s implementation and rollout to date, their views on where Encore is going (or should go) as it continues to evolve, comment on the product demo, and answer audience questions.
  2. Navigating the Millennium Interface - Barb Anderson, Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library
An introduction level session on how to navigate in the Millennium interface. It will include tips on default macros, adding macros, using right click to uncover additional information, etc. Good for new staff, or those that will be training new staff.
  3. E-Tracking: A "Global" Approach to Managing ERM - Deberah England, Wright State University
Staying on top of outstanding electronic resources troubleshooting calls and ongoing "e" maintenance can be daunting task even with an ERMS system. With phone calls, emails, and paper files to track it's easy to get overwhelmed and drop the ball on tasks. Ticklers can help, but they're still just more email in your inbox to track and manage. What is need is a method of prompting to remind you of all you need to do without cluttering up your already overflowing inbox. This session will offer a solution to keeping on top of all your e tasks with a tool you already have in house - the Millennium Serials global claim program!
  4. Hogging the Remote - Paul Hamilton, D. B. Weldon Library, University of Western Ontario
    [ PowerPoint Slides ]
Several years ago we presented a session on how the University of Western Ontario Libraries was utilizing Innovative's remote search function (Z39.50 protocol) to streamline Technical Services workflows. We would like to present an update - how we added value to remote search to provide staff with access to the best records possible.

Concurrent Session Three

  1. Merging Library Catalogs: The Plan that Worked for the Medical University of Ohio and the University of Toledo - Laura Kinner
    [ PowerPoint Slides ] [ Loan Rule Determiner Table ] [ PTypes ] [ ITypes ] [ Location Codes ] [ Fixed Field Codes ]
This presentation will discuss the process of planning, preparing and implementing the merging of the data between the Medical University of Ohio's library catalog (OSLER) with the University of Toledo library catalog (UTMOST).

The University of Toledo had a new president effective on January 1, 2006. This new president was also the current president of the Medical University of Ohio located just 5 miles from the main campus of the University of Toledo. Workgroups were formed immediately to begin the work of merging the two Universities into one cohesive University.

The Library Integration Workgroup was formed to examine how the libraries, distance learning and academic support operations could be integrated or merged into single entities to reduce duplication of services and increase efficiencies in the delivering of services to students on both the Health Science Campus and the Main campus.

The points of this presentation will center on the merging of the Health Science campus library and Main campus library catalogs.
    * Who was involved in this project?
    * The planning for the merging of the library catalogs
    * The preparation of the data in both catalogs.
    * The issues involved in merging the data.
    * The strategies developed to resolve the issues.
The presentation will conclude with the changes (static and ongoing) in the reorganized Technical Services Department of the University of Toledo Libraries

  2. FeedBuilder: Implementation in and out of the Catalog - Victor Zuniga, Westerville Public Library
    [ PowerPoint Slides ]
So why should you have an RSS Feed on your site? RSS feeds allow users to access information quickly and effectively. This presentation will show you how to implement RSS feeds in your library catalog as well as in your website. The speaker will walk you through the configuration, implementation and placement of the token in the catalog as well as third party tools for implementation onto your site. The presentation is intended for all users interested in learning about the benefits of RSS Feeds and Web 2.0.
  3. Flight Plan: Maintain Accurate Records - Carol Ficken, University Libraries, University of Akron; Robbie Robertson, University of Akron Law Library; Sara Douglas, University of Akron
    [ PowerPoint Slides ]
Very seldom in technical services work are we able to anticipate problems ahead of time. Usually, the problems become apparent after the fact: when the book doesn't arrive, the issue is lost, or the invoice is never received. Finding ways to anticipate problems ahead of time using the III Create Lists function can save valuable staff time, provide more accurate records, and avoid a last minute crisis.

This presentation will demonstrate how to use the create list function for troubleshooting both serials and monograph orders, claims, and check-in in order to locate potential problems and resolve them ahead of time-not after the fact. These tasks do not need to be overwhelming and we can show you just how easy these lists are to implement.

Planning, scheduling, and creating lists to review records helps maintain accuracy, ensures having 'clean' records, and improves user satisfaction. Also, various problems that would be time-consuming to locate and correct if not identified in a timely manner are located and resolved quickly and easily. This presentation will help you learn how to create and run specialized lists, a process which can be done by all levels of staff. You will see that the Create List function can make some of your work "light as a feather" and your anxiety will just float away!
  4. Update on Products from Innovative - Bill Easton, Innovative Interfaces
Find out about new products from Innovative including Express Lane, Pathfinder Pro, and Program Registration

It's amazing what can accumulate over the years! Of course we love books, but when space is tight you must control the collection (How did we get 10 copies of ____??!!). Here at Bierce library we have been using a combination of Millennium Create Lists, inventory lists, and hand-weeding to perform an overhaul on our collection. This presentation will cover Millennium tips to make clean-up a success, as well as the overall philosophy we have employed to streamline our stacks. We customized our Patron Reviews implementation to allow integration into academic coursework for some of our special collections. These new features open up exciting opportunities for our patrons and I will share the triumphs and tribulations of implementing them.
  3. You Could Look It Up: Using Millennium Statistics - Corey Seeman, Kresge Business Administration Library, University of Michigan
    [ PDF Slides ] [ PowerPoint Slides ]
Millennium Statistics is a great tool that helps libraries create a large number of statistical reports with ease.
