Brenda Nixon, an Ohio resident and author/contributor with 35 books, will be speaking about the Amish culture on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m., in Rodman Main Auditorium. With an insider’s look at the Amish way of life, Nixon brings our Amish friends and neighbors to life. Her daughter is married to an ex-Amish man, the son of a bishop, and Nixon’s home has become a safe house of sorts for those who have chosen to live in the English world–earning her the nickname “mom to the ex-Amish”.
The Alliance Historical Society will offer a program in RPL’s main auditorium on Monday, Feb. 23, at 7:00 p.m., titled “What is That?”. It will feature some items from the Historical Society’s collections that were the rage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but may not look familiar to persons in the 21st century, such as a fluting iron, mirroscope, and Edison cylinders. Attendees are encouraged to bring along items from their collections and see if Historical Society members can guess the items.
